This video shows what you get out of the box with the Drupal 7 version of Node Reference Highlight and accompanying features.  This provides Typo module support as well as an example reference item and a glossary of terms.  This video shows the site builder side of this module but it’s a very robust API for modifying, adding and altering other reference types.
